Tacos, Brisket, Robotics, Carne Guisada
By Derek | January 7, 2020
A good Tuesday. (7th)
Got up early to take our older son to a scheduled doctor appointment. I bought us tacos on the way back from the doctor’s.
Our local BBQ joint is closed this week, so we had to make due. Jill bought a couple of pounds of brisket to tide us over, so I had a couple of brisket tacos for lunch.
Robotics is back in full swing. The elementary team got their robot mostly done, and got in some good practice. Our middle school team was able to design and build a “lifter” for the back of their robot to pick up the cubes on the field. That seems pretty successful at this point. Our next competition is a little over a week away.
Jill made carne guisada in the Instant Pot for dinner tonight. It was amazing, but a bit too spicy for her and our younger son, and it didn’t really taste like traditional carne guisada, but it was very good nonetheless. I’ll be eating some of that for lunch tomorrow for sure.

PT, Customers, Movie
By Derek | January 6, 2020
A good Monday. (6th)
Physical therapy first thing this morning. This is my last scheduled session, hopefully I’m healthy enough to continue on my own. They really worked me out this time.
I had a customer site visit this afternoon. Upgraded their church software to the latest version, including 2020 payroll tables, etc. Upgraded firmware on their Ubiquiti wireless access points.
Back home, and worked a bit on the same remote customer’s system from last night, just finishing it up, ensuring backup software is installed, etc.
Watched a movie with Jill before bed.

Work, Rocketry, Range
By Derek | January 5, 2020
A great Sunday. (5th)
Got up late today, after going to bed early last night because I wasn’t feeling well.
Yesterday, I worked remotely from the rocket field. Jill and our younger son went to help with setup and management of the rocket event. Basically, I stayed in the car and worked from my laptop attached to my hotspot.
I did take a break to eat lunch with our rocket group and then we came back home. I continued working, but started to not feel good, so I ended up going to bed a bit after 6pm. I got up around 10pm, I was feeling a little better, so I watched a movie with Jill.
Today we slept in, and when we got up, we kind of just lazed around the house a bit.
After a while, Jill and I decided to go to the range. As it was a Sunday, we went to Dietz in New Braunfels.
We took our friend that’s staying with us, and his girlfriend. She hadn’t shot before, so she needed some instruction. Our friend was able to get her up to speed on the pistol range. Jill shot really well, with both her 9mm and her Makarov.

Once we were done with the pistol range, we moved over to the rifle range. Our friend helped me sight in my AR, as it still needed some work. It’s only the third or fourth time I’ve shot it.
Here’s a shot of our younger son shooting his 22 single shot rifle.

We had a good time, and came back into town and had dinner together.
Once we got home, I had a customer’s system to work on, so I did some remote work, while Jill watched a movie and our younger son played some Minecraft On his PC.

Exercise, Work, Pokemon, Chili Mac
By Derek | January 3, 2020
A good Friday. (3rd)
Exercised first thing this morning.
Regular work day for me.
Went to Pokemon Trade Day at our local BBQ joint with Jill and both our younger and our older son. Hung out with the owners and did some good trades.
Made some Instant Pot Chili Mac for dinner tonight for the family. It was the first time I’ve ever made anything like this, and also the first time we’ve used our new Instant Pot.

Mostly ate leftovers from the night before.
Played a bit of Pokemon Go with Jill, met up with some others and did some raids.
Came back home, and played some Star Wars the Old Republic with my younger son.

LAN Party, Friends, RetroPi
By Derek | December 31, 2019
A great New Year’s Eve. (31st)
Slept in. Got my exercise done first, thing after I woke up, though.
Had some good friends over, Nathan and his son. Nathan brought over his XBox and his son brought over his PC. We stayed up most of the night and played random video games. I showed off my newly upgraded RetroPi console, and we ended up playing around with that. The cheap USB controllers I originally bought for it have really mushy d-pads, so they don’t work very well for most of the games. I was finally able to get some XBox 360 controllers to work on it, using my XBox 360 to PC USB adapter.
I didn’t end up going to bed until around 5:30 am.
Happy New Year!

Exercise, Switch, Ay Papi
By Derek | December 30, 2019
A good Monday. (30th)
Exercised first thing this morning.
Played a few hours of Link’s Awakening on Switch. Some of the puzzles are really difficult to figure out. There’s a room in one of the dungeons where you have to defeat the enemies in the correct order to solve the puzzle.
Ran some errands this afternoon.
Went for a drive around the city to find a Puerto Rican food truck that we thought we knew where it was at… which it is, but only on Fridays and Saturdays.
Came hone and played a bit more Link’s Awakening, then played some Brawlhalla with my younger son.
Time for bed.

Exercise, Garcia’s, Movies, Sheepdog
By Derek | December 29, 2019
A good Sunday. (29th)
Exercised first thing, then went an ran some errands. Dropped by the library to return some things.
Tried a new Mexican restaurant Garcia’s in Schertz recommenced by our good friend who owns our favorite BBQ joint. Very good food.
Watched Grease, then Grease 2 with Jill. Hadn’t seen the first one in over 20 years, pretty sure I had never seen the second one. Hint: don’t bother with the second one, it’s pretty awful.
Read about, then watched video from the White Settlement Church Shooting. Watched the evening press conference, too. I’m so glad there were trained sheepdogs in that congregation, otherwise the loss of life could have been much higher.
Re-watched Pump Up The Volume.
Went to bed.

Slept, Synch, Pokemon, Movie
By Derek | December 28, 2019
A good Saturday. (28th)
Slept in a bit this morning. Last night after we went to bed it was a bit chaotic with the dogs, and we actually didn’t get to fall asleep until after 3am.
Prepared for an org event today, for Synchronizerz https://robertsspaceindustries.com/orgs/SYNCH. CIG released a new ship, the Argo Mole, a multicrew asteroid mining ship. We had a great time, and learned a bit of the new gameplay. Jill left with her sister to play some Pokémon while I was doing the event. Synch has an event just about every Saturday, but most Saturdays I work, so I try to take advantage of them when I can.
Once I was got done with the event, had some dinner and headed out to play some Pokémon with Jill, her sister and our younger son.
Exercised late tonight.
Watched a movie with Jill; Why Him? Starring James Franco and Bryan Cranston. Pretty hilarious, but definitely not a kids movie.
