Health, Work, Blog, Shopping, Snow
By Derek | February 5, 2020
A good Wednesday. (5th)
Got up and exercised, first thing. Still watching Knights of Sidonia.
Regular work day for me.
My blog post was published today, yay! MySQL vs. MariaDB: Choosing one based on your needs.
Worked on my secondary documentation project today, we’re supposed to be spinning up a blog of some sort, for posts like the one above.
Jill and I and our younger son took our older son to work, then went to Target and HEB shopping for ingredients for another couple of Instant Pot recipes that I want to make. Details on those coming up.
While we were in HEB, it started snowing. Like literal snow, but not enough to stick. We left HEB, and went to pick up our older son from work, and then headed home.

Busy Tuesday. (4th)
Got up early to exercise, got a call yesterday from a potential new customer, so I called him back only to get his voicemail.
Our normal Tuesday, BBQ Frito Pie, Robotics, martial arts.
I did get a call back and scheduled with my new customer.
RackerGamers business cards came in today.
Jill and I took our older son to work, watched part of a movie, then picked him up and took him home, then finished our movie.

A good Monday. (3rd)
Got up early and exercised. I had an on-site with a client in Seguin today. Some QuickBooks work, mostly. Took the family, they love hanging out in Seguin when I’m out there working.
While we were there, Jill got some lunch from this great place called Amy and Cathy’s. They have great sandwiches, and they have awesome cookies.
After I finished we went to a local park and ate lunch, and played a little Pokémon, while our younger son played on the play equipment for a while and we watched the squirrels.
Drove home and got to play some Star Citizen for a few hours before we had to take our older son to work.
Came back and watched Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Then off again to pick up the boy from work.
Time for bed.

Health, TV, Pokemon, Food

A good Sunday. (2nd)
Slept In a bit this morning, then got up and exercised. I’ve also been doing 100 curls with some 3 lb. weights, for the last few weeks while I ride the recumbent bike. Yesterday I moved up to 5 lb. weights. You wouldn’t think that would make that much of a difference, but it sure does. Oof.
Watched another episode of Knights of Sidonia while I exercised. Good show.
Jill’s sister got here early in the afternoon, so that we could all go play Pokémon. They had a special 3 hour research event today for a new monster, called Minccino. We each got around 40 of them.
After that, we stopped for food at a really good pizza food truck up in Selma, ordered a Saw-Cheese (sausage and cheese pizza) and went to take Jill’s sister back to our house to get her car, as she had to go home and sleep, since she’s working overnights.
We went back to pick up our pizza, then ran our older son to work then came home for a couple of hours. I got to play some Star Citizen, Jill watched a movie, and our younger son played Minecraft.
We left late to pick up our older son, and had to make a quick trip to Walmart, since we were out of allergy pills. They have boxes of generic Zyrtec; 14 pills for 88¢. Since our younger son needs one every day, it’s the best deal we’ve found.
After that, we picked up a late dinner (breakfast) at Whataburger, then came home.

Digital Penguins, Work, TV, Movie
By Derek | February 1, 2020
A great Saturday. (1st)
Slept in a bit, didn’t get any exercise done before work.
According to Spotify, Digital Penguins had 200% more listeners in January than in December. Yep! Two hundred percent! For a total of three (3) listeners. Woot!
Got some good work done on my primary product today.
Watched an episode or two of Punisher.
Watched the first episode of The Mandalorian with Jill and my younger son. Liking it so far. His ship reminds me of the Cutlass Black, from Star Citizen.
Worked out after work, then we had to go run some errands, and play a little Pokémon.
Once back, we decided to watch Maleficent 2 as a family, it was really good.
Bed time!

TV, Health, Work, Bylaws, Tea
By Derek | January 31, 2020
A good Friday. (31st)
Watched another episode of Knights of Sidonia while I exercised. I was able to earn my January Challenge badge, with enough exercise minutes. The badge required 1,170 minutes, or roughly 38 minutes per day. As my norm right now is 30 minutes per day, and I didn’t remember about the badge until, like, the 20th, I had to step it up quite a bit the past week or so to earn it.
Regular work day for me. Got a bunch of good minor changes in to my secondary documentation project. Also was able to review a couple of other submitted articles and finalize those.
Our younger son worked on cleaning his room today, he’s still not feeling 100%, we even skipped martial arts last night, to prevent any of the other kids from getting sick.
After work Jill and I worked for a few hours on Bylaws for the non-profit we’re starting.
We left to run a quick errand around 10pm, and when we got back Jill started brewing hibiscus leaves with some of her fresh mint leaves to make tea. The tea is so good, she sweetens it with monk fruit sweetener.

A good Thursday. (30th)
Got up and exercised first thing. Started watching a new anime, Knights of Sidonia. It reminds me in a good way of Evangelion, but in space.
Regular work day for me. I worked primarily on my secondary project, I was asked to write a blog post on choosing MariaDB or MySQL, pros and cons. That took most of my day, once it gets tweeted out I’ll be sure to link it here.
Talked with my brother and father over our families’ Slack instance about an electrical issue my brother was having, mostly just brainstorming the problem.
After work, Jill and our younger son and I left to run some errands, we played a little Pokémon Go while out, and got some ice cream.
Got back and we all watched the second Picard episode.
Our younger son wasn’t feeling well, so we sent him to bed a bit early.

Health, Work, Subscribe, Picard

Sad Wednesday. (29th)
Got up first thing and did my exercise. Did 40 minutes, again, still working to earn that custom Apple Watch challenge for January.
Regular work day for me. Normally, today would be my one day a week in the office, but the company I work for has changed their liberal WFH policy. Well, changed as in effectively rescinded. Starting Feb 1st, all employees are expected to be at their desks during their work day, no exceptions. I can’t wait until flu season. Yay.
Jill found out that one of the guys who works at our local BBQ joint has pancreatic cancer ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pancreatic_cancer ). It has a very low survival rate. My younger son is very upset, as this guy is one of his best buddies over there. If we get access to a GoFundMe or something, I’ll be sure to post it.
I was introduced to this video today https://youtu.be/NVGuFdX5guE — it’s from CCP Grey, who. I watch occasionally, but hadn’t seen this one. It’s neat.
I added a new page to my blahg today: https://dereksblahg.net/subscribe/
We watched the first episode of Star Trek: Picard this evening. Intriguing.

Health, BBQ, Robotics, Python, Family
By Derek | January 28, 2020
A good Tuesday. (28th)
Slept in a bit, then got up and did my exercise. Actually did 40 minutes, instead of 30, as I’m trying to earn a special custom Apple Watch challenge for January. I’ve been pushing it up on my exercise minutes to get this badge for days, now, and I think I’ve got it in the bag.
Regular Tuesday for us, BBQ Frito Pie up first. Super yummy.
Robotics next. The two teams practiced with their robots, just refining their techniques and working to get their score up. We had them practice both teams on the field at once, so they could work on collaborating, as that’s the way the actual event runs anyway.
After Robotics, Jill and I took our younger son to his martial arts class, then went to find some food.
I hosted my monthly Python meetup this evening. Normally it’s on the third Tuesday of the month, but we’re at the scheduling mercy of our venue, so we move it around a bit when necessary.
After Python, we got home to find Jill’s niece and her kids came over to hang out with us. So we hung out and the kids played games until bedtime.

DMVx2, Art, Cookies, Star Citizen
By Derek | January 27, 2020
A good Monday. (27th)
Slept in, then went and ran a few errands. I had to renew my driver’s license, it was set to expire on my birthday next month. I had to obtain my birth certificate, since I didn’t have a copy. I previously ordered one from Idaho, but then my dad found one that he wasn’t sure he had, and sent it to me.
Just before leaving the house, Jill checked hers and discovered she needed to renew it as well, so we all went to the Pat Booker DMV and got in line. We were there for about two hours before they called us to line up. Once we were in line, it went pretty quickly.
Took our younger son to a homeschool art class. We joined this group of other homeschoolers for Monday events. Turns out, the art place is right next to Cookie Cab, so I ordered a dozen cookies for the parents while we were there.
Didn’t exercise this morning, so I had to do it this evening, once we got home.
I had to work on a couple of customer systems remotely this evening.
Stayed up late playing Star Citizen. Only a few people were on from my org Synchronizerz but I wanted to play, so I ran some solo missions and earned some money. Money doesn’t really matter in the game right now, since we’ll have a persistence wipe before the next patch drops. They have been working to increase persistence, but people keep finding economy-breaking bugs (credit duping) that require them to wipe.
